Terms of Use
What this site is
no-spec.com publishes editorial argument and practical resources for working designers: pieces on spec work, on AI in design practice, on rates, contracts and scope, on the profession's record, and on proving that a design is yours. Using the site means reading it, quoting it, arguing with it and borrowing its scripts and clauses on the terms below.
Quoting and reuse
You may quote from any piece for commentary, criticism, teaching or news, with attribution to "the no-spec editors" and a link to the page. You may reproduce the reply scripts, contract clauses and email templates in your own client correspondence and contracts without attribution; they were written to be used. You may not republish a whole piece, present our work as your own, or reproduce the site's design. If you want to reprint a piece in full, in a newsletter, a course pack or a book, ask the editors first; the answer is usually yes.
Editorial content is not legal advice
The pieces here are opinion and general information, written by designers, not lawyers. A clause that we recommend may be unenforceable, or simply unwise, in your jurisdiction, your industry or your particular deal. Before you rely on any contract language from this site, have it read by a lawyer where you practise. Nothing here creates a professional relationship between you and the editors.
The free tools
The spec value calculator, the rate range benchmark and the AI disclosure clause builder are provided free, as they are, for you to think with. Their output is illustrative. A dollar figure from the calculator is an estimate built from the numbers you typed in; a rate range is a benchmark drawn from published surveys and will not match every market; a generated clause is a starting draft, not a reviewed contract. The tools run in your browser and store nothing, as the privacy policy explains. We may change, pause or withdraw any tool at any time.
Accuracy and corrections
We source claims inline and try hard to get rates, dates, terms and positions right. We still make mistakes. If you find one, tell us with a source and we will correct the page and note the correction. We do not guarantee that any statement on the site is complete or current, and we accept no liability for decisions you make on the strength of it, including declining, accepting or pricing a piece of work.
Independence and third parties
no-spec.com is independent of the original No!Spec organisation, of AIGA, RGD and every other designer association, and of every contest platform, marketplace and software vendor mentioned on the site; the about page says who runs it. The site carries no sponsorship or paid placement, and no company reviews a piece before it runs. Links to other sites are provided as sources; we are not responsible for their content or their terms.
Acceptable use
Do not scrape the site in order to republish it, mirror it under another name, attempt to disrupt it, or pass off its text as yours. Linking to any page is always welcome, and so is disagreeing with it in public.
Changes
These terms may be revised; the version on this page is the one in force. Last reviewed: 26 September 2026.
Related policies
The privacy policy describes what the site and its free tools, such as the spec value calculator, do with anything you submit; the disclaimer covers takedown requests and the purpose of the AI guidance; anything these pages do not answer can be put to the editors.
