no-spec Practical advocacy for designers

Privacy Policy

The short version

no-spec collects nothing about you that it could hand to anyone else. There is no account to create, no newsletter to join, no comment system, no advertising and no third-party script on any page. What follows is the longer version, written so that a designer who is used to reading contracts can check it against the site's behaviour.

What we store: nothing

The site has no database of readers. We do not collect names, email addresses, IP addresses or device identifiers, and we have no mechanism for tying a visit to a person. If you write to editors@no-spec.com, your message sits in an ordinary mailbox and is used only to answer you; we do not add correspondents to any list.

The free tools run in your browser

The spec value calculator, the rate range benchmark and the AI disclosure clause builder are scripts that run on the page you are looking at. Anything you type into them, hours, rates, project details or client names, is handled by your own browser and is never sent to this site or to anyone else. Close the tab and it is gone. Because nothing is transmitted, there is nothing for us to store, log or leak. You can confirm this in your browser's network inspector: submitting a form produces no request.

Cookieless traffic counts at the edge

The network that serves this site produces aggregate traffic statistics at the server: how many requests a page received, which countries they came from, which sites referred them, and which browser families were used. These counts are generated at the edge from the request itself. No cookie is set, no script runs in your browser to produce them, no identifier is stored, and the figures cannot be traced back to a person. We use them to see which arguments are being read and for nothing else. We do not run any other analytics, tag manager, pixel or session recording.

One local preference

The site remembers whether you chose light or dark mode. That preference is stored in your browser's local storage under a single key, is never sent to us, and can be cleared from your browser settings at any time. No other cookies or local storage entries are set by this site.

Request logs for security

Like any site on the public internet, the hosting layer may keep short-lived request logs (address, path, user agent, time) for the purpose of blocking abuse and diagnosing outages. These logs are not used to identify or profile readers, and we do not export or analyse them.

Links to other sites

Articles link to their sources: association position statements, government guidance, rate surveys, contest terms. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which this policy does not cover. We do not embed content from them; a link is a link.

Your rights, and changes

Because the site holds no personal data, there is nothing to access, correct, export or delete on request, but you are welcome to ask and we will confirm that in writing. If any of the above changes, for example if a newsletter is ever added, this page will say so and the review date will move. Questions go to editors@no-spec.com or the contact page; who runs the site is on the about page.

The terms of use cover how the articles and the free tools may be used and quoted, and the disclaimer explains what the guidance on AI disclosure and provenance is for. Corrections and questions about either go to the editors.
